In reference to "Holsplitter" (Wood Splinters), the composition "Slivers," like the entire album, is a tribute to the founders of the venue, Hildegard and Walter Schär, who opened Bau 4 in their family-run timber company as a venue for creative music concerts. In 2025 after 20 years of music curation, they handed it over to the next generation. For this farewell concert Hemingway developed a site-specific project. As in the quartet piece "Bau 4 Assembly" for which he adopted wood scraps from the company's cutting machine which the ensemble uses here as an additional sound source: rubbing and clattering. Depicted in his score as flying parts in space, fragments of a larger whole, like the sounds formed by the ensemble itself. (Maxi Broecking)
